Merlin G. "Mert" Winchell Merlin G. "Mert" Winchell, age 93 years of Sauk City and formerly of Elroy, Wisconsin, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Maplewood in Sauk City. He was born on September 16, 1928 to Adrian and Cena (Turney) Winchell. Merlin was united in marriage to Jane Huschka on November 24, 1951, with whom he shared 65 years with. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2016. Merlin was very proud of his service to our country. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy, spending a great deal of time overseas. He shared many memorable stories of his years in the Navy. Merlin and Jane operated the Cone Shop in Elroy prior to his employment at Walker Stainless. Mert was plant manager for many years. He retired from Walker Stainless and joined his sons at Winchell Welding. Mert had a passion for antiquing and auctions, spending many years collecting and selling the treasures he found. He will be greatly missed by his surviving children, Merlin (Gloria) Winchell of Delaware, Anthony "Tony" Winchell of Mineral Point, Joan (Joel) Bones of Elroy, Jean (David) Pulvermacher of Roxbury and Jane "Franny" Winchell (Arnie) of Merrimac. He is also survived by nine Grandchildren and eighteen Great Grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Jane; he was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Winchell; his parents, Adrian and Cena; step father, Charles Sterba; brothers, Adrian and Donald Winchell and sisters, Theta Young, Virginia Sands, Rosella Warner and an infant sister, Evelyn Winchell. There will be no services at this time. The family will join together to celebrate their father at a later date. The Picha Funeral Home in Elroy is assisting the family with arrangements.
