Robert James Kretche, 94, of Hillsboro passed away November 24, 2023 at his home.
He was born November 24, 1929 to Phillip and Amelia (Prucha) Kretche in the Township of Union.
Robert was united in marriage to Mary Jean Wopat on June 27, 1951 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Dilly. They farmed in the area until 1966 when they moved to Madison, where they lived for 24 years. In 1988 they retired and built a new home back in Union Township. Robert and Mary were married for 71 years, until her passing, just 11 months before his own.
He earned an Associate Degree in Accounting. He estimated the construction of East Towne and West Towne Malls in Madison until completion. He then worked for a couple of lumber yards, estimating residential and business construction before retirement.
When Robert returned to Hillsboro he pursued his love of history and genealogy. He assembled many family histories. He was also an author of several books about the area, including “Trails to Hillsboro” and “Trails to Dilly”. He volunteered at the Hillsboro Historical Society, was a member of the Friends of the Library, an avid Cesky Den supporter, and a devout Catholic. He also served as a supervisor for the Township of Union. He spent many hours in his garden and enjoyed his morning breakfast gathering with friends.
Robert is survived by his sons Robert F. Kretche and Don Kretche; daughter Kathy (Steve) Lindsey; four grandchildren Jason (Crystal) Kretche, Adam Lindsey, Matthew (Alyssa) Lindsey, and Jamie (Mark) Mueller; and three great-grandchildren Maven Kretche, Brooke Kretche, and Abigail Lindsey; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Mary, a brother Frank Kretche, a sister Phyllis Subera, and his daughter-in-law Grace (Larson) Kretche.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hillsboro, with Father Don Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the Wopat Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Church from 10:00 until the time of service.
