William Huebel Obituary

William E. “Bill” Huebel, age 93, of Wonewoc, Wisconsin passed away on April 11, 2024, at home with his loving daughters.

Bill was born on October 4, 1930 in Wonewoc, the son of William J. Huebel and Hilda (Mihlbauer) Huebel.  He graduated valedictorian of his class from Wonewoc High School in 1948.  He attended the University of La Crosse for a short time but had to return home to support his family after his father was diagnosed with TB.  It was then he started his career at Ray-O-Vac where he was hired to work in the shipping room.  He worked his way up through various positions and ended up retiring from a management position 48 years later in 1993.

In 1951, Bill married Beverly Brown of Elroy, Wisconsin.  Together they raised 3 daughters.  Bill and Bev were married for 62 years.  They were both very dedicated to volunteer community service.  Bill served as a Village Trustee, Village Clerk, Village President, on the Wonewoc Fire Department, as an EMT (he was very proud of his badge number 353 being one of the early EMT’s trained in the state), the Juneau County Housing Authority which was responsible for constructing 12 senior living units around Juneau County and many roles in the United Methodist Church.  He also contributed time and energy to many local improvement projects such as the Village of Wonewoc Swimming Pool, clearing the Baraboo River for canoeing, beautifying the streets with flowering crab trees and building the shelter in Wonewoc for the 400 Bike Trail.

Bill and Bev enjoyed many years together after they retired building a new house, gardening, traveling and spending social time with friends and family. Bill’s many hobbies included bird watching, coin and stamp collecting, woodworking, hunting, fishing, recording local history and reading.  In his later years he continued his passion for community improvement as he orchestrated and supported the painting of a mural by the Wonewoc Public Library.

Bill will be missed by his loving family; daughters Laurie Wurster (Steve Fleming), Julie Hebel and Betsy Huebel (Dave Silverberg); grandchildren Sarah (Jeff), Ashley (Alex), Brandon (Stacey), Whitney (Jordy), Hailey and Sam; great grandchildren, Charlotte, Preston, Nolan, Will, Eloise, Ryder and Fritz; many relatives and longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bev; sister, Phyllis; son-in-law’s, Mark Riggle and Marvin “Doc” Wurster and his grandson, William Tyler Wurster.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on June 8, 2024.  Visitation starting at 11:00 am, service at 11:30 am and a luncheon to follow all at the family home fondly known as “Huebel Hollow,” W9354 State Hwy 33, Wonewoc.
